I am by no means an expert in anything yet- I think I’m too young to call myself an expert on anything at this point (except for perhaps eating good food). However, I love finding the answers to questions and I do hope to one day call myself an expert in something in the green realm (currently aiming for anything to do with greening China and ecosystem services). In the meantime- I thought I’d start a green blog.
I am a twenty-something female who grew up in South Texas; went to college in Western Massachusetts and the UK; lived in Boston for a stint; and finally moved to D.C. in 2006 to work in the environmental/non-profit sector. I’ve worked in the think tank sector, the international NGO arena and am currently working for a Federal agency working on land management. Now, we talk lots of politics in D.C. as it is- so my aim is actually to stay off the topic of politics and simply to act as an information clearinghouse to make it easier for people to live a greener life that leaves less of an imprint on our planet. Please do not email me to shout at me about some of the Federal government’s policies; there’s lots of good for every bad that is published.
I find working on this blog has turned into a kind of stress relief from always having to look at things at the national or international scale. When you observe trends from that height- things start to look really depressing and it’s hard to figure out what positive role one person can play. So I decided it’d be great to provide information on anything green happening here in the District and I would love to have more input and info sources that others might have to provide. So for an example of the role I hope to play – if we know that forests in South Asia and South America are being ravaged by U.S. and EU consumers – I will provide info on where you can buy FSC certified furniture or wood products here in D.C.
Enjoy.

Have you heard about Park(ing) Day 2008, happening in D.C. on September 19th?
National Park(ing) Day 2008 is an annual event, which celebrates parks in cities by creating temporary parks in public parking spaces. National Park(ing) Day is an all-volunteer event, and any participation is welcome. One can build his or her own park, help others build parks, or simpy visit Park(ing) Day parks. Look at http://www.tpl.org/parkingday for details, a how-to manual, photos and videos, or to connect with participants near you.
Email me at nathan.h.tone@gmail.com if you are interested in participating, or if you have any questions. Go Green Girl!
